Safely Sharing The Road

When sharing the road with commercial vehicles, you’re at a greater risk of getting into an accident. It’s important to proceed with caution when driving alongside large trucks, as an accident can result in significant damage.

In order to ensure maximum safety, you should be able to identify the type of truck that it is. Oversized vehicles are larger in both length and width compared to the standard commercial vehicle. Oversized trucks should always have flashing lights on both ends of the vehicle so that passenger vehicles can easily identify them. These types of trucks are extremely dangerous due to their monstrous size, simply identifying their presence on the road can prevent a potentially hazardous situation.

Also be mindful of long tractor trailers, as their stopping distance is significantly longer than other semis. Long vehicles like this often tow different types of trailers, which can be as long as two semis. Due to their great length, they make larger turns, which is why identifying them is especially important. In addition, their length allows them to carry more cargo, which increases their weight, another reason to exercise caution!

While sharing the road with these types of trucks, it’s important to keep a safe distance between you and the vehicle. Avoid positioning yourself between in their blind spots at all times! Often times, for these types of trucks, they’re legally allowed to make a turn from the middle lane. Always give way to the truck and never try to overtake them, they’ll need additional space for wide turns. It’s important to remember that if you cannot see the truck driver in their mirror, they cannot see you!

Maintain a safe speed when sharing the road with large trucks. Never ride alongside trucks in an adjacent lane, weather conditions can often cause sudden shifts from the truck. If the driver is going pass, allow them to pass you and maintain a reasonable distance behind. When traveling alongside a large truck on a roundabout, it’s important to remember their wide turns. Large trucks need a greater turning radius thus, they’re more prone to shift lanes while on roundabout lanes.
